DOMBIVLI RETURN MOVIE REVIEW

Story: Anant Velankar (Sandeep Kulkarni), an honest middle-class man, stumbles upon some incriminating evidence against his boss, a minister. But how will he use this evidence?

Review: Fourteen years ago, Sandeep Kulkarni’s movie Dombivali Fast put forth the stark realities of a common man’s life in Mumbai. Likewise, Dombivli Return, too brings us face-to-face with the life of a middle-class man in this fast-paced city. But there ends the similarity between these two movies.

Anant and Ujwala (Sandeep Kulkarni and Rajeshwari Sachdev) have a small house and a happy family living in Dombivli. Working as a PRO in the state ministry, a normal day at work turns into a nightmare for Anant when he gets incriminating evidence against Dadasaheb (Durgesh Akherkar), his boss and a prominent minister. The protagonist who idolizes his boss, hands over the evidence to Dadasaheb, asking for nothing in return. But that does not spare him from getting caught in the whirlwind of politics, which gives him money and power. But, will he pay the price for getting easy money?

Mid-way into the film, the flow of the story starts feeling patchy and some peculiar editing transitions hamper the flow. However, at the climax it all makes sense when the viewer is treated to a well thought-out twist in the tale, that scores brownie points for the movie. The seemingly predictable story takes a complete turn, changing the entire perspective of the viewer. For most of its running time, the movie is gripping. However, some clichés, unwanted scenes and an item number hold it back from being an exceptional film.

Like Dombivali Fast, Sandeep carries Dombivli Return on his able shoulders with sheer brilliance. The same can be said for Amol Parashar, who plays Anant’s younger brother, and Rajeshwari. Their performances are praiseworthy. The late Ashwini Ekbote is also seen in a brief appearance.The child actress , who plays Anant’s daughter, deserves a special mention.

The film has an interesting plot which is executed well and ends convincingly. Although not exceptional, the movie is worth watching once.
